The biggest problem and probably the most common sources of chaos and financial waste in many organizations is a mismanaged and out of control business operation. If a software application cannot reduce failures in the system if employees do ot use it effectively.

Integration is an extremely important element of ERP's. The main goal of ERP's is to integrate data and processes from all areas of an organization and unify it for easy access and work flow. ERP's usually accomplish integration by creating one single database that uses many software modules providing different areas of an organization with various business functions. Although the ideal configuration would be one ERP system for an entire organization, many larger organizations create an ERP system and then build upon the system thus eliminating ERP failure story's. They create external interfaces for other stand alone systems which might be more powerful and perform better in fulfilling an organizations needs. Usually this type of configuration can be time consuming and does require lots of labor hours.

In business, making a system work effectively requires a balancing act between micro-analysis and macro management. In the end conservation and balance will determine how effective a particular system is.

There will be particular places that if you understand a system and it's components you can exert a slight effort and effect large changes throughout a system. This is known as leverage. Without this knowledge a slight effort in the wrong direction can make the system ineffective
